Manual or automatic tracking
You choose how the timeline is built. Manual tracking needs nothing at all; automatic tracking needs Screen Recording and an AI engine.
Manual tracking
Add activities yourself. Hindsight needs no permissions and no AI setup, and captures no screen content.
- Open Activity in the main window.
- Click the + button in the toolbar. Add Activity opens for the day you are viewing.
- Fill in Activity, App / Source, Category, and optionally Project and Context, then set Start and End.
- Click Add.
Automatic tracking
Hindsight takes a still screenshot every 20 seconds by default, and when you switch apps, skipping frames where nothing changed. A vision model describes each window, and Hindsight groups the descriptions into activities, one per task however long it took.
- It needs Screen Recording permission only. Hindsight never asks for Accessibility.
- Window titles come from macOS with the capture. The model reads one off the screenshot only when macOS gives none.
- It takes still frames. No video, no audio, no streaming.
- Sleep and idle time are marked as away, not counted as work.
Automatic tracking also needs a Vision Engine that can run. See Choose an AI engine.
Use both
Manual activities and automatic ones share the same timeline. You can add an activity by hand for a day when tracking was off, such as a meeting away from your Mac.
